The new policy replaces the 34 years old National Policy on Education (1986), aims to overhaul the country’s education system, and is aligned with the 2030 agenda for sustainable development goals.

With five foundational pillars of Access, Equity, Quality, Affordability and Accountability, the policy aims to transform India into a vibrant knowledge society and global knowledge superpower by making both school and higher education more holistic and flexible, suited to 21st century needs.
